Since RobustWealth launched in 2015, our founder Mike Kerins, CFA, FRM, has been committed to maintaining an active community presence in and around its headquarters in Lambertville, New Jersey. For the past several months, RobustWealth has been in the midst of creating and implementing its latest service project, the first STEM Lab ever built for a special education school in New Jersey.
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math, commonly referred to as “STEM” is a curriculum that combines these four disciplines into one cohesive unit. STEM curriculums focus heavily on real-world applications and hands-on learning. STEM labs and centers incorporate the same technology that practicing professionals use.
The Children’s Day School is a private school for children with special education classifications. The main goal of the program is to improve student’s function in a classroom setting so they may return to their sending school district. These students come from low-income families across Mercer County, predominantly in the Trenton area.
The Children’s Day School is funded through tuition paid by local school districts. This funding does not pay for extra amenities such as technology upgrades, science equipment, etc. Any additional improvements to the school must be paid for by donations.
The staff of the Children’s Day School already had their sights on bringing STEM materials to the school when Mike Kerins approached them with his idea to donate bikes and computers to the students. Together, they were able to envision and execute an entire STEM center filled with new and exciting pieces of technology, including 3D printers, robotic arms, microscopes, and Chromebooks for the students.
RobustWealth will stay heavily involved with the STEM Center even after it is fully developed. Team members will teach lessons to the students every week about how to use the technology and to conduct different projects. We look forward to engaging partners such as TCNJ and Schroders to help us expose students to even more perspectives and experiences within the lab.
